General Description
The AS5043 is a 10-bit rotary position sensor (previously known as encoder) for absolute angular measurement and with a programmable analog output over a full turn of 360° based on contactless magnetic sensor technology. This device fits perfectly for on-axis applications where a simple 2-pole magnet rotates above or below the sensor IC and the zero position can be programmed into the device.The absolute magnet angular position is measured with a resolution of 10 bit = 1024 positions per revolution and it is provided as a digital value on the serial interface (SSI) and on the analog output signal.

Based on a Hall sensor technology, this device measures the orthogonal component of the flux density (Bz) over a full-turn rotation and compensates for external stray magnetic fields with a robust architecture based on a 14-bit sensor array and analog front-end (AFE). A sub-range can programmed to achieve the best resolution for the application. To measure the angle, only a simple two-pole magnet rotating over the center of the package is required. The magnet may be placed above or below the device. The absolute angle measurement provides an instant indication of the magnet’s angular position. The AS5172 operates up to a voltage of 16.5V and is protected against overvoltage up to +20V. In addition, the supply pins are protected against reverse polarity up to – 18V.

The industry-standard I2C interface supports simple user programming of non-volatile parameters without requiring a dedicated programmer. By default the output represents a range from 0 to 360 degrees. It is also possible to define a smaller range to the output by programming a zero angle (start position) and a maximum angle (stop position). The AS5600L is also equipped with a smart low power mode feature to automatically reduce the power consumption. An input pin (DIR) selects the polarity of the output with regard to rotation direction. If DIR is connected to ground, the output value increases with clockwise rotation. If DIR is connected to VDD, the output value increases with counterclockwise rotation. The AS5600L is available in a standard SOIC-8 package and in a WL-CSP for applications requiring small-sized sensing solution with a size of 2.07mm x 2.63mm x 0.6mm. Both variants are qualified for a temperature range from -40°C to 125°C.
