Digital X-ray Systems

Digital X-ray systems are essential companions of radiologists in their daily practice. Their output constitutes the basis for diagnosis in various types of medical examination, including mammography, cancer screening, bone fracture screening, chest imaging, dental imaging, angiography and many more.​
Flat Panel Detectors are the core of any digital X-ray system. They collect the radiation generated by the X-ray tube and filtered through the patient’s body. They deliver the output image that radiologists examine to formulate their diagnosis.

How a Flat Panel Detector works

Flat Panel Detectors (FPD) are complex pieces of equipment, made up of several blocks. The largest is the pixel array that collects the radiation. Different technologies exist to convert these impinging X-rays into electrical charge, depending on the application requirements. On top of this primary functionality, the pixel array also contains some switches that steer the flow of the converted electrical charge into the readout nodes.
Alongside the pixel array, the FPD features a row of specific Integrated Circuits (IC), called ReadOut ICs (ROIC), which convert the electrical charge into a digital output, suitable for further processing and display by a computer. Along another side, a row of gate driver ICs controls the state of the switches.

The combination of fast speed, low noise and low power consumption maximizes the image quality and minimizes the patient’s exposure to radiation, while reducing time to market.​
