Your tasks and responsibilities

  • PhD/Doctoral Thesis: Development of a general reference system for investigating light-tissue interactions. Placement is within the framework of a large, industrial organization that is internationally recognized for providing technological leadership in opto-electronic systems and components.
  • You are carrying out fundamental research to establish and improve our understanding of light-tissue interactions in relation to existing and future vital sign monitoring applications. A general objective is to optimize the conditions for optical measurement and to extract the maximum amount of information from data.
  • Once the experiment is established, you will ideally proceed to developing and calibrating a tissue model in significantly greater detail than what is available today, reflecting most all phenomena that can be experimentally observed.
  • While scope and details can be held flexible to an extent and are subject to discussion, we currently believe that the following could be a logical approach to reach the general objectives:
  • Realization of a spectroscopic polarization state generator and -detector to investigate the light tissue interactions
  • Characterization and calibration of the system
  • Development of a complete system model
  • Development of tissue models
  • Development of (complex and automated) data analysis routines
  • Identification of new/future applications
  • Formulation of requirements for future- and/or more stringent applications
  • Oversight of a representative study on test subjects using your measurement system
  • You will encounter:
  • State-of-the-art optical- and opto-electronic systems
  • A large pool of scientists and experienced professionals to provide guidance and support for your research
  • Well-equipped laboratory environments and, within reason, all the resources needed to support your work
  • Fundamentally complex and non-obvious interactions between light and human tissue
  • Mathematically challenging system theory and non-trivial model development

Your education and experiences

  • Preferred background: PhD/Doctoral student in Physics, Optical- or Electrical Engineering, or comparable
  • Strong interest in bio-medical applications, specifically in light-tissue interactions
  • Must have- or can be expected to develop a strong expertise and creativity in developing data analysis routines
  • Willingness to learn and to use simulation and design tools, such as Lighttools, Zemax, Solidworks/CAD, etc.
  • Marked personality traits are assertiveness, innovative capacity, and integrity, you are an excellent team player, an excellent communicator, you are respectful, open minded, honest, and performance oriented
  • German language knowledge (at least B2 level)
  • Driving license (to travel between 2 sites in Germany)
