Your tasks and responsibilities

  • In this role, the Optics Product Definition Engineer works in the Optical Sensor Solutions (OSS) Division of AMS, managing the definition of optical elements and assemblies for consumer, automotive and industrial applications. The focus will be on leading-edge, micro-optical element solutions, with an emphasis on excellent optical understanding
  • We are looking for strong candidates with excellent technical skills and understanding in the fields of optics for lighting and sensing, in terms of application and manufacture
  • Working for the Optics Project Definition Director for optical elements, the Optics Product Definition Engineer will be expected to carry out the following duties
  • Liaise directly and globally with AMS Business Lines and OSS internal Engineering to assess new optical product feasibility
  • Gather and collate all necessary new product requirements documentation e.g. optical performance specifications, mechanical constraints, reliability requirements etc.
  • Develop the initial optical element/assembly specification
  • Present, discuss and develop the technical solution with the customer as necessary
  • List technical risks and mitigations
  • Identify technology gaps, propose solutions
  • Assist the Project Manager in structuring the early stage design, development and sampling schedule
  • Support in the development of a cost model by providing technical input

  • Excellent interpersonal skills for clear, concise communication between the AMS Business Lines and technical teams, with emphasis on communication with the global Engineering team
  • A strong eye for technical detail, especially in the context of product requirements and specifications
  • Agility in a fast-moving development environment
  • A strong personality to be able to both challenge and motivate the development teams
  • Resilience in the face of challenges
  • Out-of-the-box approach to problem solving
  • Ability to simplify seemingly complex problems, get to the point quickly and formulate actions to resolve practically
  • Strong, broad technical understanding in the field of optics for practical commercial application
  • Excellent organizational skills, especially in gathering and precisely documenting technical requirements
  • Ability to liaise across functions (Optical and Mechanical Design, Prototyping Manufacture) to build up a precise product technical definition
  • Highly precise use of language to accurately communicate between technical team, Product Management and Customer
  • Very good skills in MS Word, Powerpoint, and also Project
  • Confident, precise presentation skills
  • Excellent spoken and written English. German knowledge an advantage
  • At least 5 years’ experience in optical element/system technical development
  • Solid experience in the creation of technical specifications based on input requirements and technical brainstorming
  • Previous experience in the application of micro-optical elements to commercial systems a major advantage
  • Experience in developing requirements and specifications directly with customers a distinct advantage
  • BSc or higher education in an Engineering or Science discipline required
  • Education in optics or closely related field a major advantage
